ASPERMONT – Rolling Plains landowners can learn more about whitetail
deer and how to adapt their
land management strategies to promote this important species of native
wildlife at an April 12 deer
appreciation day here.
“We will cover a lot of information at this meeting. It will be a valuable
resource for landowners who want
to know how to manage for and promote whitetail deer on their property,”
said Rebel Royall, Stonewall
County Extension agent-agriculture. “Those who attend can also earn
three continuing education units
(CEU’s).”
The meeting begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. in the Stonewall County
Community Center in
Aspermont, and will conclude around 4 p.m. Extension offices in Stonewall,
Kent, King and Dickens
counties are sponsoring this event.
“We will kick off the morning with a presentation on appreciating deer,
followed by an overview of deer
management for the Rolling Plains,” Royall said. “Dale Rollins, Extension
wildlife specialist based at San
Angelo, will present this information.
“A panel of three landowners will share their experience and perspectives
on leasing and managing land for
deer and deer hunting. Other morning speakers will cover whitetail
anatomy and acquaint landowners with
the deer management triangle – a concept encompassing age, nutrition
and genetics.”
A presentation on the Buckskin Brigade, an Extension Service wildlife
program for youth will follow the
noon lunch.
At 1 p.m., participants will travel to the IOU Ranch for field demonstrations
on assessing deer habitat;
brush control and deer; how to age deer; and an ongoing fecal study.
Pre-registration before April 6 costs $10 per person. Registration thereafter
costs $20 per person. The fee
includes refreshments, lunch and some materials, Royall noted.
