LUBBOCK – Joe Kirk Newbrough was recently appointed Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Extension agent for Gaines County on the Texas South Plains, according to the Gaines County Commissioners Court and Jett Major, Texas Cooperative Extension South Plains district director for agriculture.
A native of Andrews, Texas, Newbrough grew up on a cotton and peanut farm. He earned a bachelor’s degree in integrated pest management from Texas Tech University in 1999, and a master’s degree in entomology from Tech in 2001.
“Joe Kirk Newbrough has a strong background in agriculture, entomology and integrated pest management. This experience includes working as a graduate research assistant in entomology and as a research assistant in plant and soil science at Texas Tech,” Major said. “He also worked as a research assistant with the USDA Agricultural Research Service and the Extension Service, and was a crop consultant with Terra, Inc., in Corpus Christi.
“He will be a strong addition to the skilled team of Extension agents who serve the citizens of Gaines County.”
While in college, Newbrough served as president and vice president of
the entomology club.
He also served on the student advisory committee of the southwestern
branch of the Entomological Society of America.
Newbrough will be one of four Texas Cooperative Extension county agents
serving Gaines County.
Their mission is to work as a team to provide leadership and programs
in agriculture, family and consumer sciences,
4-H and youth development, and community development for the citizens
of Gaines County.
