COLLEGE STATION  – Stanley M. Young, long time Texas Cooperative Extension agent in
Lubbock County, recently received the prestigious Superior Service Award from his Extension
peers and administration at a recent faculty conference here.

The award is the highest honor given to Extension faculty and staff. Eighteen individuals and
three teams were recognized with the 2002 award. Dr. Ed Hiler, vice chancellor of agriculture and
life sciences with the Texas A&M University System and Extension director, presented the
awards with Dr. Chester Fehlis, associate vice chancellor and Extension deputy director.

Young received the distinguished career category award for the extraordinarily creative,
aggressive, enterprising and diversified Extension educational programs.

He graduated from Texas Tech with a bachelor’s degree in animal science in 1968, and earned a
master’s degree in animal breeding from Texas Tech in 1976. He began his Extension career 27
years ago, serving most of that time in Lynn and Lubbock Counties on the South Plains.

Young established the Lubbock County Agriculture Committee in 1987. The committee is now
recognized as one of the top groups in ag leadership and education on the Texas South Plains. He
also serves on the executive board of the Texas Pork Producers Association, the board of
directors of the National Agriculture Heritage Museum in Lubbock, and is vice president of the
Texas Hampshire Breeders Association.

“Stanley Young is the type of person ‘who will do to ride the river with.’ This means he is a
person who has the unquestionable confidence and faith of his peers, to accomplish any job that
may be at hand,” said John Farris, Texas Cooperative Extension agent in Dawson County.

“He is always devoted to the task at hand, yet his is also planning for the next county, district,
state or national event that lies just around the corner,” said Dennis Poole, Borden County
Extension agent. “Stanley Young is a true educator who teaches in the classroom, field, or on the
front lawn, if necessary.”
