Hybrid Sorghum Field Day Set at Halfway Research Station

LUBBOCK – Seedsmen and grain sorghum producers can see the latest hybrid grain sorghums in the field, get an update on current research and production practices, and hear from the National Grain Sorghum Producers Association at a Sept. 26th grain sorghum field day, said a Texas A&M agronomist.

“The Halfway research station will host this field day, which begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. The station is about 15 miles west of Plainview on U.S. Highway 70,” said Calvin Trostle, Texas Cooperative Extension agronomist at Lubbock. “This up-close look at the latest hybrid grain sorghums is made possible by Texas A&M University and the Sorghum PROFIT
research program. PROFIT stands for ‘Productive Rotations On Farms In Texas.’

“Drs. Darrell Rosenow and Gary Peterson, Texas A&M sorghum breeders at the Lubbock Research and Extension Center, will be on hand to explain their work. We also will get an update from Jeff Dahlberg, National Grain Sorghum Producers Association.”

The field day agenda includes:

  • 8:45 a.m. – Review of commercial food-grade hybrid sorghum field trial; Calvin Trostle.
  • 9:05 a.m. – Review of TAMUS and PROFIT breeding programs, including new releases
  and germplasms; Darrell Rosenow and Gary Peterson.
  • 9:45 a.m. – News from the National Grain Sorghum Producers Association; Jeff Dahlberg.
  • 10 a.m. – Break
  • 10:15 a.m. – Review and update of grain sorghum production practices; Trostle.
  • 10:35 a.m. – Distribute CEUs, being individual tours of sorghum breeding nursery and
  germplasm evaluation trials.
  • 11:30 a.m. – Adjourn.
